Understanding the Meridian System: A Guide for Beginners
The concept of meridians comes from traditional Chinese medicine, where they are described as pathways through which vital energy flows. While this may sound abstract, modern research has begun to identify physical correlates that lend credibility to this ancient model.
In energy psychology, meridians are important because they form the basis of techniques like EFT tapping. When you tap on specific points along these pathways, you are working with the body's own energy system to promote emotional and physical healing.
There are twelve primary meridians in the body, each associated with specific organs and emotional functions. For example, the liver meridian is linked to feelings of anger and frustration, while the kidney meridian is associated with fear. When energy becomes blocked or stagnant in these pathways, it can manifest as emotional distress or physical symptoms.
Modern research has provided some support for the existence of meridians. Studies using infrared thermography and electrical skin conductance have found that acupressure points along meridian pathways show distinct physical characteristics compared to surrounding tissue. These points tend to have lower electrical resistance and higher temperature.
For beginners, the most practical application of meridian knowledge is through EFT tapping. You do not need to memorise all twelve meridians to benefit from the technique. The standard EFT tapping sequence uses just nine points, which are located on the face, upper body, and hands.
The key points include the karate chop point on the side of the hand, the eyebrow point, the side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, the chin point, the collarbone point, under the arm, and the top of the head. Each of these points corresponds to different meridian pathways, and tapping on them in sequence helps clear energy blockages throughout the body.
Understanding the meridian system does not require years of study. Even a basic awareness of how these pathways work can deepen your practice and help you understand why energy psychology techniques are so effective.
